MARILYN MINTER. American, born 1948. In visceral and gaudy paintings, photographs, and video works, Marilyn Minter examines the relationship between the body, cultural anxieties about sexuality and desire, and fashion imagery. Minter is best known for glossy, hyperrealistic paintings in enamel on metal that depict closeups of makeup-laden lips, eyes, and feet—a liquid-dripping gold-toothed smile or a pair of glistening high heels splashing in metallic fluid. Strut (2004–5) portrays a muddied foot in a gem-encrusted high heel. Minter also photographs body parts seen through panes of wet glass, captured from characteristically dynamic and provocative angles that suggest the seductive, disturbing nature of glamour.
Minter states: “I’m trying to make an image of what it feels like to look. I want to make a fresh vision of something that’s compelling; something that commands our attention; something that is so visually lush that you’ll give it multiple readings adding your own history and traditions to the layered content. Some things make you feel transcended; others make you feel slimed. I’m constantly looking for that transcendent moment.”
Minter has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2005, the Center for Contemporary Art, Cincinnati, Les Rencontres d’Arles festival in 2007, France, OH in 2009, La Conservera, Centro de Arte Contemporáneo, Ceutí/Murcia, Spain in 2009, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland, OH in 2010 and the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, Germany in 2011. Her video Green Pink Caviar was exhibited in the lobby of the MoMA for over a year, and was also shown on digital billboards on Sunset Boulevard in LA, and the Creative Time MTV billboard in Times Square, New York.
Minter was included in the Whitney Biennial, and in a collaboration with Creative Time she installed billboards all over Chelsea in New York city. In 2009, she had a solo exhibit at Regen Projects, Los Angeles, and Salon 94, New York. In the spring of 2011, Minter had a solo exhibition of her work from the 80’s at Team Gallery, New York, and another solo exhibition with Salon 94, New York. She was featured in Commercial Break, at the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture and POST, for the 2011 Venice Biennale. Her work is featured in “Riotous Baroque”, a group exhibition that originated at the Kunsthaus Zurich which will travel to the Guggenheim Bilbao in June 2013. Currently, Minter is showing five new large scale paintings at her second solo exhibition at Regen Projects, Los Angeles. According to the press release, the new work “deepens Minter’s investigation of how we communicate with the illusion of glamour via advertising in public spaces.”
Minter currently teaches in the MFA department at the School of Visual Arts in New York, and is preparing for a traveling retrospective of her work which open in 2015 and travel to numerous locations to be announced.
